Plant Rice with Your Fingers

Wet soil, a tray of seedlings, and a finger. Push a hole, drop a seedling, firm it.

Rice is planted by hand across most of Asia and doing it that way, even in a plastic tray, connects a preschooler to something enormous that they will see out of a car window for the rest of their life.

It is also excellent fine motor work with a real outcome, which is a category we do not have enough of at this age.

The page has the spacing, which children will ignore, and a note that ignoring it is fine and produces its own lesson three weeks later when the crowded ones struggle. The seedlings themselves come from a nursery tray started two weeks earlier, and the sheet includes that setup too.
