Banana Leaf Pattern Play

Cut banana leaf into strips. Add flowers, stones, seeds. Then lay out a repeating pattern and ask the child to continue it.

Pattern recognition is standard preschool content and normally done with plastic bears. Doing it with garden material changes two things. The materials are irregular, so the child has to decide what counts as the same, and the whole thing can be swept back into the compost when it is finished.

Start with two elements alternating. Three elements is a term later, not a session later.

The sheet has the material list, the progression, and a photograph frame for recording the child's own pattern, because they will make one you did not expect and it will be gone in a minute. We photograph them and the collection over a year is genuinely impressive to parents.
