Nature Math, Level 1

The biggest level in the series, and the one that matters most.

Grade one is where number sense either forms or does not, and forty nine pages is not padding. Counting, grouping, comparing, then tens and ones, each one revisited in several different physical forms until the idea is separate from the objects it arrived in.

Tens and ones is the section to slow down on. A child who has bundled ten sticks with string and then counted four bundles and three loose has done place value with their hands. The notation afterwards is just a way of writing down something they already understand, which is the correct order and not the usual one.

Every page keeps the same shape as kindergarten. Set up, try this, say and ask, done when. Book and game ideas at the end of each.
