Five year olds estimate a coconut palm at anything from three metres to a hundred, and the spread is the lesson. We then measure the only way available, which is counting how many children lying end to end would reach the trunk's height if it fell over, and that method itself is worth discussing.

The answer is roughly eight to twelve children for a mature palm, which surprises them.
