From Rice Plant to Lunch

Six stages, ending in a pot on a stove.

We run this as the closing lesson of the rice thread and cook at the end, which children remember for years. The sequence work on the sheet is done before the cooking, so the cooking is the reward and the reveal rather than a distraction.

The stage most children have never considered is milling, the removal of the husk. It is invisible in every kitchen and it changes the appearance completely.

The page has the six stages, the sequencing frame, and a simple cooking method for a classroom. It also has the safety notes, which are short and matter, and a suggestion to invite a parent who cooks rice daily to lead the last part. That invitation has produced some of our best sessions.
