Rice Planting Sequence

Rice is the most useful teaching plant in Southeast Asia and almost nobody uses it in early years. Every child in the region eats it daily. Very few have any idea where it comes from.

This sheet gives six stages, from seedling tray to harvest, out of order. Children cut and arrange them. The sequencing skill is standard kindergarten work. The content is not, and that is the point.

We developed this alongside a rice tray in the classroom, which is simply a shallow container of wet soil with seedlings in it. If you have that running, the sheet becomes something children check their own tray against, and the whole thing changes from an exercise into an investigation.

The page includes the six images, a strip to glue them onto, and a short note on what each stage is actually called in Indonesian and Malay, since many of your children will have heard those words at home.
