Five Senses in the Garden
by Eric Gonzalez-Payne

See, hear, smell, touch, taste. Five boxes, one walk.
Taste is the one that needs the adult. We use a designated tasting plant, usually mint or a cherry tomato, and everything else is off limits, which is stated on the sheet in a form you can read out loud.
Hearing is the box children find hardest and it is the most valuable, because filling it requires stopping. Most classes need a full minute of silence before anything gets written in it.
The page has the five boxes, the taste safety rule, and a group sharing routine at the end. The sharing surfaces how differently five children experienced the same fifteen minutes, which is a quiet lesson in perspective that we do not label but do not waste either.
