Rice from Mud to Bowl
by Eric Gonzalez-Payne

Four trays in a line. Wet soil, a growing seedling, dry grain, cooked rice.
The child walks the line and touches each one. That is the entire lesson and it takes four minutes. What it does is give a shape to something the child eats every day and has never once thought about.
We run this at the end of the rice thread, after the touch basket and the water tray, and it works as a summary the children can put their hands into.
The page has the four station setup, the order, and the language. It also flags the practical thing, which is that the cooked rice station has to be made fresh and eaten or thrown away. We tried to reuse it once. Do not.
