Grain in a sealed jar makes an excellent noise and toddlers will shake it for a long time. Then you open the jar.
The reveal is the lesson. The sound had a cause and the cause is something you can hold. That is a first, small piece of scientific reasoning arriving at eighteen months through a plastic jar.
We use three jars with different grains, rice, mung bean and corn, which sound genuinely different. Children start choosing a favourite within a couple of sessions, which is a preference and therefore a comparison.
The page has the jar builds, sealing advice because a toddler will get one open eventually, and the sequence for the reveal. One warning. Once shaken, the jars become instruments and the session becomes loud. Plan for that rather than fighting it.
