Rice Touch Basket

Dry rice in a shallow basket, hands in up to the wrists. Every toddler in Southeast Asia has eaten rice a thousand times and touched it as a plant zero times.

The sensory part sells itself. What makes this a lesson rather than a sensory bin is the second object, which is a stalk of actual rice plant laid beside the basket. The child handles both. Over weeks the connection forms without anyone explaining it.

Use uncooked rice and expect to lose some to the floor and some to mouths. The page includes the supervision note and a cheaper alternative using broken grain from the market.

We keep the same basket out for a full term. The children who ignored it in week one are often the ones who take it over by week six.
