Bali Rice Water Budget

Rice uses far more water than students expect and the number is worth calculating rather than being told.

The cycle has phases with different requirements and the budget has to reflect that. Flooded establishment, maintained depth, then drainage before harvest.

The page has the phase breakdown, water depth requirements, evaporation and seepage estimates and a total. It also compares against alternative methods that use substantially less, which exist and are practised, and asks why they are not universal. The answer involves labour, risk and weed control, and is a good example of why an obviously better technique may not spread.
