Rice Farming Roles and Systems
by Eric Gonzalez-Payne

Farmer, water manager, labourer, miller, trader, transporter, retailer, cook.
Most of these are invisible to a student and several are the difference between a crop and a meal. The mapping makes the chain concrete and sets up the value chain work in grade seven.
The page has the role cards, a system map, and a question about which roles capture the most value. The answer, that it is rarely the farmer, is uncomfortable and accurate, and grade six can handle it without it becoming a lecture.
