Grams per square metre. A real agricultural measure, calculated from their own crop.
The number will be low compared with a working farm and that comparison is worth making, because the reasons are interesting. Soil, water control, variety, pests, and the fact that nobody in the class is a farmer.
The page has the tracking log, the yield calculation, and a comparison against regional averages, which are included. Children who have grown a plot and then seen what a farmer achieves on the same area come away with a specific and durable respect that no lesson about agriculture delivers.
