The observation comes first and is non negotiable. Poetry written from memory of gardens in general is terrible. Poetry written about the specific ant on the specific leaf in front of you is often very good.

We use a list poem, a five line shape and a two line closing form.

The page has the observation frame, the three forms with examples, and a display plan. Grade four poetry about the garden has been the most read thing we have ever put on a wall, including by parents who ignore everything else.
