Herbal Garden Sketchbook Page

Draw the plant. Properly. From life, with labels, in pencil.

Botanical drawing is slow looking with a pencil in your hand, and it produces knowledge of a plant that no amount of reading matches. Eight year olds can do this well if given enough time and permission to rub things out.

Twenty minutes minimum. Thirty is better. Anything less produces a cartoon.

The page has the sketch frame, label lines, and a scale note. It also asks for one detail drawn magnified, which is where children discover leaf hairs and vein patterns they have looked past for years. That magnified box is consistently the best thing on the finished page.
