Seed Gathering Tally Trail

Walk the same route every week. Collect what has fallen. Tally by type.

Repeating the route is what makes this work. After three weeks the tallies change, and the change is seasonal even in the tropics, where seasons are subtle and hard for children to perceive any other way.

We use four seed types and an other column. Other fills up and becomes a conversation about categories that are too broad.

The page has the tally grid, space for four weeks, and a comparison prompt. Keep the sheets. A term of them stapled together is a genuine data set and the class can be shown its own graph, which for grade one is an unusually satisfying end to a project.
