Helpful Herb Garden Labels

The class makes the labels the garden actually uses. That changes everything about the effort that goes in.

Each label carries the plant name and one short line about what it does. Lemongrass, keeps mosquitoes away. Ginger, helps a sore tummy. The writing is short because the label is small, which is a useful constraint for grade one.

We laminate them. In the tropics an unlaminated label lasts about nine days.

The page has the label templates, the six plants with their uses, and a placement map. The children who wrote the labels then read them aloud to visiting parents, unprompted, for the rest of the year. It is the single best return on a writing lesson we have.
