Harvest Bundle Count

Bundle ten stalks. Tie it. Count the bundles.

This is place value with string. A child who has physically made a bundle of ten and then counted four bundles and three loose has done tens and units with their hands, three years before the notation makes sense.

The tying is fiddly and takes longer than you expect. Budget the time or do the tying yourself and let the children count.

Doing it before the notation, then meeting the notation, is the right order and it is not the order most curricula use.
