Texture Treasure Hunt

Rough, smooth, waxy, hairy, sticky, papery. Find one of each.

Waxy is the interesting one. Six year olds have handled waxy leaves their whole lives and have never had a word for the property. Once they get it, they find it on twenty plants in ten minutes.

The recording is a rubbing where possible, which works well for bark and rough leaves and not at all for sticky, so the sheet has a drawing box as the alternative.

The page has the six textures, the recording frames, and a note on the plants to avoid touching in a tropical garden. That list is short but it is real, and it should be read to the class before they go out rather than after somebody finds a stinging nettle relative.
